Regrouping of Numbers For Subtraction

Regrouping means to regroup 1 ten to 10 ones to perform subtraction of a bigger number from smaller number

Sometimes we have to subtract a bigger number from a smaller number at ones place.

That means we do not have enough ones. Then we have to regroup 1 ten to 10 ones and then add them to the digit at ones place so that subtraction can be performed.

For example

45 = 40 + 5

     = 4 tens + 5 ones

     = 3 tens + 1 ten + 5 ones

     = 3 tens + 10 ones + 5 ones

    = 3 tens + 15 0nes.

Illustration 1: Fill in the blank.

A. 2 tens + 15 ones

B. 2 tens + 10 ones + 5 ones

C. 2 tens + 5 ones
